Chapter Nine

After her afternoon seminar, Susan set off to find Amanda—and if possible, her roommate Jill. Something about Jill nagged in the back of Susan’s mind—she thought the girl knew more about Jesse than she was telling. She wasn’t exactly sure how she’d find Amanda, let alone Jill, whom she’d never laid eyes on. She couldn’t count on help from the housing office, since she’d worn out her welcome there when Missy Jackson was killed.

With a sudden thought, she called Jake. He was alert enough these days that he could help her.

He answered with, “Hi, Susan. When are you coming by?”

“In a bit. But you know you asked me to find out about Jesse’s friends? Well, I’m trying to do that, but I need your help. Could you call Housing and find out what dorm and room Amanda Meyer and her roommate live in?”

“Susan, I don’t know that this is a good idea...”

“Do you want to find out who killed Jesse?”

He was silent so long she thought maybe he’d fallen back to sleep. But finally, slowly, he said. “Oh, all right. Of course, I do. But, Susan, if this backfires...”

“Trust me.”

“Yeah,” he said, “where have I heard that before? Give me a couple of minutes to explain to them that I’m doing an investigation from a hospital bed. Likely story.”

“Of course, it’s a likely story,” Susan said and hung up.

Jake called back within five minutes with the dorm name and the girls’ room number. #306 Oak Hall.

“Okay. Soon as I talk to the girls, I’ll be there. In time for supper.”

“Supper,” he muttered. “This hospital food is killing me. Can you bring me something decent? Like chicken-fried steak.”

Good sign that he’s hungry, but she wasn’t about to violate hospital rules. “Every time I’ve been there, it’s seemed like a generous tray,” she said righteously.

“But you haven’t tasted it. Mashed potatoes without salt and pepper, roast beef with no taste.”

“Maybe I could bring salt and pepper.” Susan didn’t mean to be smart, but it did strike her as funny. She could see all kinds of reasons chicken-fried steak was not good for Jake.

“Susan, go do what you have to do and then bring me some food.” His voice came as close to a growl as she’d heard in days, and she rejoiced.

But then she set off for Oak Hall. Amanda wasn’t in her room, but Susan’s knock was answered by a slim young girl with long, straight blonde hair.

“You must be Jill.”

“And you’re Doctor Hogan. I recognize you from newspaper pictures.” She did not invite Susan in, nor did she look particularly cordial. “Amanda told me you’ve been stalking her. She’s not here.”

Susan was so taken aback, she stammered. “S-s-stalking?”

Jill waited.

“I wanted to talk to her and waited for her after class one day.” By now she’d gathered herself. “That’s hardly stalking. Besides, I wanted to talk to you.”

Jill still blocked the doorway with her tall, thin body. She was the opposite of Amanda—lean and wiry as though she worked out every day, with straight hair that lay perfectly flat around her face.
